Philosophy

The why behind the how.

In my own experience as a student, I was often dissatisfied with the teaching methods my teachers and professors employed. Often times, students are handed a formula, walked through a single example, and expected to apply pattern-matching to carry them through an entire problem set and exams. That method of teaching falls apart the second the problem changes shape, which is inevitable in STEM. My own discontent with this teaching method is what inspires me to teach using first-principles derivation with intuitive reasoning. This method of problem-solving will turn you from the student who feels lost once one number changes, to the student who always knows where to start.

My tutoring sessions center on understanding the fundamental concepts behind the problem we are solving. Where does that formula come from? Can we reason out why that formula makes sense? Can we relate it to something physical we can imagine? I have found unlocking the answer to fundamental questions such as these often enables students to understand concepts in a way they didn't before.

The goal is not for students to leave a session only better at solving a specific type of problem. The goal is for them to leave their session with a better ability to sit down with an unfamiliar problem, attack it from multiple angles, and understand concepts at a deeper level.

Who I am.

For two years, I worked as a Supplemental Instructor (SI) at my local community college (Lemoore College), where I led review sessions, held office hours, and worked one-one-one with 150+ students across multiple STEM subjects such as Calculus I–III, Physics, Statics, and Coding with C. The students I helped ranged from recent high school graduates to adults returning to school, and I was consistently ranked as one of the top SI's by students, professors, and faculty. Alongside SI, I conducted private tutoring for high schoolers enrolled in AP Calculus (AB & BC). Every student I prepared earned a 4 or 5 on their AP exam, passed the AP course itself, and in doing so strengthened their transcript prior to applying for colleges. One is now studying Biomedical Engineering at Northeastern University.

In Fall of 2022, I started my academic journey at Lemoore College and left with a 3.99 GPA, four associate degrees, a multiple President's Citations. I was at the top of most my classes across math, physics, and engineering, and was recognized during graduation for excellence in engineering and mathematics. I am now a senior in Mechanical Engineering at UCLA carrying a 3.93 GPA, with A+ marks across classes such as Fluid Mechanics, Dynamics, Circuits, Thermodynamics, Advanced Strength of Materials, Spacecraft Design, and more. I was the thermal subsystem lead and co-system engineer for a debris-removal spacecraft design team, worked on the Suspension sub-team for Bruin Formula racing where I designed and owned a lightweight A-arm welding fixture and prototyped a carbon-fiber A-arm design, and now I conduct research on hydrophobic membranes for drag reduction in Professor CJ Kim's Micro and Nano Manufacturing Lab.

Tutoring is a private thing. But I believe the resources people need to build a strong learning-mindset should be public. I post full derivations of tough problems, common misconceptions worked out in real time, and techniques that generalize across subjects.
